ShoreTel IP Phones

Sean Newbold - Friday, July 27, 2012

ShoreTel offers IP phones (also known as VoIP phones), to suit every type of business user: from executives, to operators, to remote workers, to call center supervisors. An integral – and ergonomic – part of ShoreTel’s VoIP telephony solution, ShoreTel phones come preconfigured, reducing dramatically the time required to deploy your VoIP business telephone system. And because ShoreTel phones interoperate with ShoreTel Communicator, it is easy to extend the reach and features ShoreTel’s business VoIP solution well beyond the walls of the office.

Everybody is talking about VoIP being the wave of the future in telecommunications, but what are some of its advantages? This is an easy question to answer, since there are so many advantages to VoIP. We will address some of the major ones in this article.

The most important advantage, and also the most talked-about, is that of cost savings. VoIP provides a significant cost savings over telephone service from the traditional providers. This is particularly true in the area of long distance rates, with many VoIP service providers offering plans with unlimited long distance calling at a low monthly flat rate. Very few traditional carriers offer affordable unlimited service – even if they do the monthly rate is prohibitive for the average consumer. So most consumers end up paying some form of per-minute rate for their long distance.

Another area where VoIP provides a significant cost advantage is that of lower basic rates. VoIP providers do not have the overhead costs of maintaining large networks, and they can pass this savings along to the consumer.

The other area where VoIP service provides significant advantages is that of available features. Because of the fact that VoIP is a digital technology, the feature set is extensive when compared to traditional telephone service. Some of the available VoIP features do not even exist in the traditional market, while others are greatly enhanced. Besides the advantage of having these features available, some of them can be used to achieve significant cost savings as well.

One feature that is unique to VoIP, and can also be used to lower costs, is that of virtual phone numbers. Since VoIP is not geographically based, providers are able to assign any area code that they have available to a given number. This allows you to choose the area code that you want your phone number to have, even if you are not physically located in that area. You will pay a small surcharge for this option, but the cost savings are significant. There are a couple of ways to save money by using a virtual phone number.

If you normally place a lot of long distance calls to a given area code, then you can make any call to that area code a local call by simply choosing that area code for your VoIP phone number. You may not wish to do this with your primary phone number – this would most likely mean that your local area would become a long distance call. But if you make many calls to that area code in a given month, then a second number with the other area code could be added, and you would still save all of the long distance charges to that area.

A virtual phone number can also be used in a reverse manner – if you have a small business, then a virtual number could be used to eliminate long distance charges for the people who call you from that area code. You could, in effect, provide your business customers or relatives with a free phone number to call you.

One feature that is greatly enhanced by VoIP service is that of multi-party (or conference) calling. While this feature is available from most traditional telephone providers, it is quite expensive. Most VoIP providers offer 3-way calling at no extra charge, and some have the capability to bring 3 or more additional people into a conversation.

Sean Newbold - Thursday, July 26, 2012

From ShoreTel:

The National Ice Centre and Capital FM Arena Nottingham, the East Midlands’ hottest concert and sports venue, has selected ShoreTel for its UC platform and Contact Center. The ShoreTel solution will enable the organisation to move its ticketing system in-house and provide customer experience befitting the social networking age.

National Ice Centre’s primary aim is to entertain, while ensuring that customers’ overall experience is something to remember. We are pleased to help the organisation deliver a brilliant time to its patrons.

The premier event venue has two Olympic sized ice pads and is home to Capital FM Arena Nottingham, which hosts live music and sporting entertainment for audiences of up to 10,000 people. With the proliferation of digital technology, customers expect leisure and entertainment industry to keep pace with the digital revolution sweeping through the world and want an experience that is commensurate with the age of technology.

In order to raise the quality of customer experience as well as maximise revenue stream, the National Ice Centre decided to move its ticketing in-house. ShoreTel reseller Astro Communications helped identify the UC platform and Contact Center solution that met the recreational organisation’s needs.

The ShoreTel UC solution allows real time management of all communications channels – email, voice and Web chat – enabling a better and more responsive customer service platform. Previously staff had to log out of one channel of communication in order to access another. In addition, ShoreTel’s Web-based browser allows the venue staff access to the system from any location, facilitating a flexible work environment and improved response time; ensuring customer service operators are not bound to a single location.

“Bringing our ticketing in-house has enabled us to optimise our revenue stream. We are now able to capture 100 percent of the booking fee on every ticket sold as opposed to only 25 percent when our ticketing system was outsourced. The entertainment and event sector is about facilitating a great time and it’s crucial for us that our customers have the best possible experience all the way through from planning, to booking the tickets as well as at the event. ShoreTel’s solution is simple, flexible and scalable and allows us to improve the quality of customer experience.”
- Rob Williams, IT director at the National Ice Centre.

Sean Newbold - Thursday, July 19, 2012

ShoreTel 13 is now available globally.

The latest software release includes enhanced capabilities for video communications and instant messaging (IM) for overall employee productivity.

Through ShoreTel Communicator, the call manager application within ShoreTel 13, users can participate in room-based video conferences using industry standard H.264 AVC technology. This enhanced video support enables users to communicate from their desktop or laptop, whether in the office or working remote, adding a new level of simplicity to productive collaboration.

Unlike vendors who are focused on closed ecosystems, ShoreTel’s support for open standards includes an array of open interfaces that allow seamless integration of third-party information and applications from leading communication and video collaboration solution providers.

ShoreTel 13 also introduces instant message capability for ShoreTel Communicator with Personal Access, giving every ShoreTel user access to IM at no additional cost for users. ShoreTel 13 also offers extended enterprise contact centre agent capabilities based on services enabled from SIP trunking service providers. In keeping with the brilliantly simple approach, enterprises can leverage standards-based IM servers, such as ShoreTel XMPP IM server, or protect existing investments in already-installed technologies, such as Microsoft SIP-based Lync, for ShoreTel Communicator.

ShoreTel embraces open standards and continues to deliver new products based on SIP, XMPP and H.264. ShoreTel is among the first UC leaders to join the Unified Communications Interoperability Forum (UCIF), a non-profit alliance of worldwide technology leaders working together to fully realise the potential of unified communications. As UC systems have become more mature in the past few years, existing and prospective customers are anxious to see new standards that will provide the best possible experience for users. ShoreTel is now working closely with video partners for wider adoption of video standards including H.264 SVC.

With a distributed architecture for resiliency, the ShoreTel 13 unified communications software release continues to ensure ease of deployment, ease of management, ease of scalability, and ease of use, across a single-image system around the globe and is available in 48 countries around the world. The software upgrade is included at no charge to all existing customers with a maintenance agreement.
