Structured Cabling

Structured Cabling

The use of a structured cabling system offers a platform for the broadcast and transference of voice, data and multimedia information across business offices and premises. Cables are connected to the local data / comms cabinet and are "run" to designated locations throughout the office. These locations are equipped with cable outlets (much like power sockets), enabling the simple connection of desktop devices and other IT equipment to the network via a patch lead.

As Structured Cabling is a vital element of any corporate IT network, it is critically important that the correct solution is installed and tested for performance. In addition to connecting PC's and servers to the network, structured cabling is also used for connecting printers, IP CCTV systems, wireless access points and telephone systems.

The performance of structured cabling is defined by "Categories". These categories refer to the rate at which the proposed data can be transferred across the network. At Nexsis, we thoroughly test and assess all structured cabling upon installation, ensuring the daily data requirements of your business are met compressively.

  • Category 5e: Used for LAN network support, up to 1000Mbits/s (1GB). This is the minimum level to which all Nexsis Structured Cabling schemes are installed.
  • Category 6: Offers better levels of performance and cabling infrastructure, operating at 250Mhz. Category 6 cabling supports data transference speeds of up to 1GB, with the potential to support larger amounts of data in the future.
  • Category 7: Is a fully shielded cabling system that can provide more than twice the bandwidth of Category 6 cabling, specified to 600Mhz.
Structured Cabling Services From Nexsis Comms

Structured Cabling is governed by industry standards, and one of these standards is a limit on the length of a cable which can be installed (up to 90 meters). If your installation has the potential to run over this length limit, Fibre Optic cable would be chosen to help reduce the cable length. Firbe Optic cables offer high speed data transmission of up to 10 Gigabit and is often called the “backbone” technology.

As cabling systems become larger and the need to transmit data at ever increasing rates becomes greater, the case for fibre optic cabling becomes more relevant. Whether it is used in the vertical backbone or to link buildings across a campus, fibre optic cabling offers a modern, cost-effective solution.
